Approximately 20 years after BioWare's launch of Baldur's Gate, the company announced that their upcoming shooter Anthem has officially passed the alpha development phase milestone, i.e. each part of the game is in and functioning.
The news was announced by BioWare's Casey Hudson, who recounted his humble beginnings in the then-50 strong company that was preparing to unleash Baldur's Gate upon the world. Apparently, Hudson is just as hyped for Anthem as he was for Baldur's Gate, especially since the team are having a "ton of fun" test driving it.
Naturally, Anthem's alpha means there's still plenty work left as far as bug fixing and fine tuning goes. Hudson pointed out that the game's complexity isn't likely to make this any easier, but "everyone knows what they need to do and [are] working with a level of passion and effort that’s truly inspiring."
He says that the company is really aiming big with Anthem, with plans for the game's launch being equally ambitious as those for the post-launch content. At the same time, he announced that additional info will follow soon, including when we'll get the chance to have a go at what we've been drooling over for some time now.
The company is apparently overjoyed with the support shown by Anthem's fans, whose interest in the game serves as great motivation for BioWare. "All the effort that the team puts into making these games is really fueled by the hope that in the end, you will like what we’ve made", he concluded.
We've seen plenty of Anthem thus far and while we'll refrain from vouching for anything gameplay related, we can confirm that the game already looks the part. The company made sure that the story behind the NPCs is as deep and rich as the in-game world, even if trailers don't really reveal much in that respect.
Anthem launches on 21 February 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and although EA's involvement raised quite a few eyebrows, BioWare insists that their participation doesn't include anything else than publishing.
