Next year's Call of Duty will be developed by Treyarch, not Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games as previously expected. The publisher Activision made the decision to give Treyarch the creative leadership on the new Black Ops game.

Activision have informed the creators of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: WWII that they will no longer lead Call of Duty 2020 project. Instead, the publisher are putting Treyarch in charge of the new Black Ops game, set to release in 2020.

It's a big change from Activision's traditional development plans which included three development teams, rotating every three years to bring new Call of Duty game. Treyarch worked on every Black Ops instalment since the first game released back in 2010 but for next year's Call of Duty, Activision changed things a bit as Treyarch released Black Ops 4 last year.

Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games were supposed to lead the project but Activision had a change of heart once again, meaning that Treyarch will have only two years to develop the new game.

According to Kotaku's sources, Treyarch will take creative leadership on new Black Ops, while Raven and Sledgehammer will serve as support studios. The work that they've done on new single-player story mode will be transformed into a campaign for Black Ops 5, which will, apparently, be set during the Cold War. Kotaku also claim that Black Ops 5 will likely be a cross-gen game as both next PlayStation and Xbox consoles are expected in Autumn 2020.

Some Treyarch staff said they're not pleased with Activision's decision and are already getting ready for overtime hours and brutal crunch they faced during the work on Black Ops 4. Some other members are excited about the change and already have solid game plans that shouldn't change during the development, unlike their last two games.

Some rumours are circling around about Activision's love for free to play as a revenue model. It's possible that Black Ops 5 embraces this model for some of its game modes. We already know that this year's Modern Warfare will have some sort of free to play component but there are no additional details on that just yet.
