Bethesda have posted a fresh development roadmap for The Elder Scrolls Online that stretches to second quarter of 2019. Their priority, however, is fixing the performance degradation on base editions of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Note that The Elder Scrolls Online's roadmap is a living document, i.e. Bethesda will be updating it with new information they come across, but the general changes they're announcing are likely to stay.
That said, the dev reserved the right to delay a few updates here and there, as they're anticipating that some of deeper tweaks of The Elder Scrolls Online's architecture changes will require more time in testing.
As for the more immediate features, Bethesda said, "We know that ESO performance has degraded for some players, especially on the base PS4 and XB1. We're not happy with this, and we know how important it is for us to alleviate the situation and give regular updates on what we are doing", they wrote.
Bethesda reminded that supporting a five-year-old game in a constantly evolving landscape, both in terms of technology, content and player behaviour, is a challenge in itself, but that they're proud of how far they've come with the community.
Come the fourth quarter of 2019, The Elder Scrolls Online will be getting a memory management overhaul, which aims to address memory fragmentation, as well as a complete re-write of the Looking for Groups system feature.
There will also be some "behind-the-scenes combat optimisations" that are intended to lighten the server load by rewriting some of the more consumptive combat abilities.
2020 will bring a patching overhaul, which promises to change everything from downloading to storing ESO on your drives, ultimately introducing a significantly smaller footprint than the current edition has.
Also coming in 2020 are improvements in load times, asset streaming, asset load tweaks for consoles, faster loading of art fixtures and characters and more.
Note that once these updates are out, players will have to re-download the game on all the platforms.
