Tim Sweeney has said that getting Sony to enable cross-play between PlayStation 4 and other consoles was one of the greatest moments in the history of Epic Games. It was a series of tough discussions that left him tired but pleased.
Last year, Sony officially announced the support for cross-play between their PlayStation 4 console and Microsoft's Xbox One and Nintendo's Switch for Epic Games' Fortnite.
It was a huge move from the Japanese giant and the one that Epic Games and millions of Fortnite players were anticipating for a long time. Epic Games CEO and founder Tim Sweeney talked about Sony's decision in a profile in The Wall Street Journal and how cross-play support helped Fortnite cement the world's biggest game spot.
Sweeney initiated the negotiations between Sony and Microsoft to introduce cross-play between their devices, a task that seemed impossible and light years away from becoming a reality. He describes it as "an effort in international diplomacy" in which he was left tired but pleased.
"Given the long-term rivalries, it was a series of contentious discussions," Sweeney said and continued that the cross-play is a historic moment for the company. "It was one of the greatest moments in Epic's history," he concluded.
Epic Games and Sweeney are often under the fire from players for exclusive deals with various development studios and publishers which, unfortunately, often overshadows Sweeney's part in huge moments for gaming such as cross-play between PS4 and Xbox One.
Sweeney also commented on the negativity that is surrounding Fortnite and its worldwide success. As expected, Sweeney doesn't agree that Fortnite is addictive and thinks that you could often say the same thing about playing football or watching it. "It's unfortunate to characterise having a lot of fun as something more sinister," he said.
In March 2019, it's been reported that Fortnite reached 250 million players on all platforms, with 10.8 million concurrent players. You can bet that Sweeney and the gang will keep the game growing as they fight with Gabe and co for number one spot on the PC platform with their Epic Games Store.
