In a groundbreaking move, Riot Games has announced a comprehensive and gradual overhaul of the League of Legends ranked system for the upcoming 2024 season.
This transformation includes substantial changes to the Matchmaking Rating (MMR) calculation, aimed at addressing long-standing issues and enhancing the overall ranked experience for players.
Riot aims to detect players' actual ranks faster and with high accuracy, reducing the need for smurfing and new account creations.
Detecting 'Actual' Rank Faster and With High Accuracy
Riot aims to combat the challenges associated with smurfing and new account creations by implementing matchmaking changes.
These adjustments will swiftly detect players' actual ranks, ensuring quicker placement into appropriate matches. This rapid detection is designed to reduce the number of matches required for players to reach their true elo, discouraging disruptive practices.
Moreover, Riot emphasizes that the accuracy of MMR detection will significantly improve, eliminating the need for players to resort to opening new accounts to recalibrate their rankings. The forthcoming changes promise a more precise reflection of players' skill levels within their original IDs.
Additionally, Riot acknowledges the concerns of rank anxiety and introduces measures to make reaching a negative LP state more challenging in the upcoming season. Negative LP states, where LP losses surpass gains, will be more difficult to achieve, fostering a more positive and encouraging ranked environment.
Trueskill 2 System
Riot is contemplating a paradigm shift by considering the adoption of Trueskill 2, a system developed by Microsoft specifically for games with more than two players.
Unlike the traditional Elo rating system, which primarily considers wins and losses, Trueskill 2 incorporates a comprehensive array of factors. These include individual performance metrics like K/DA, CS scores, warding, time played, pre-made factors, and player statistics over time.
The current Elo system, rooted in chess, struggles to capture the complexities of League of Legends' 5v5 dynamics.
Trueskill 2, with its multifaceted approach, aims to provide a more nuanced and accurate representation of a player's skill, accounting for various aspects that contribute to success in a team-based game.
While Riot is still in the planning phase regarding the implementation of Trueskill 2, players can anticipate witnessing a more refined ranking system, even in the early stages of the 2024 season.
The modifications to rating systems signify Riot's commitment to delivering a fair and comprehensive ranked experience.
