A recent controversy has arisen surrounding an upcoming online horror game centred around the popular children's cartoon character Mickey Mouse. Allegations have been made against the developers, Nightmare Forge, claiming that the game's title is inappropriate and linked to the Nazi secret number 88.
However, the developers clarify that the number 88 is meant to represent the historical setting of the game, referring to a specific year in the last century. The accusations are unfounded, and the developers assert that there is no connection to any controversial symbolism.
In order to mitigate potential complications, Nightmare Forge has decided to rename the game. The new title is now "Infestation: Origins," as announced in an official statement on the matter:
"Unfortunately, at the time of its announcement, we were unaware of any additional meanings the number ’88’ has. Through feedback from the community, we learned it did and therefore made this name change ASAP."
Regrettably, this isn't the initial accusation that the creators of Infestation: Origins have encountered. They were recently criticised for employing AI-generated voice acting, with allegations suggesting the use of well-known voice-generation services like ElevenLabs. The developers have neither confirmed nor denied these claims, leaving the outcome of this situation uncertain.
As of now, the game's release is confirmed for the PC/Steam platform. Console confirmation is still pending, and regarding the release date, it's officially slated for sometime in 2024. However, given the ongoing controversies, the possibility of further delays cannot be ruled out.
