Star Fox is available now on Nintendo Switch 2, launching today, 25 June 2026, at $49.99 digitally and $59.99 physically. The remake has been built by Velan Studios, the developer behind Knockout City, and represents the franchise's first significant entry since Star Fox Zero in 2016. Critics have responded warmly, with an aggregate score of 82 on Metacritic and 84 on OpenCritic, placing it behind only the original Star Fox 64 in terms of critical standing within the series.
The consensus across outlets is that the remake looks stunning and plays even better than the original but leaves some wanting more in terms of new content. Nintendo Life called it "a sublime remaster" with a "stunning visual overhaul and snappy controls" while acknowledging that anyone who has played Star Fox 64 extensively will find no surprises here.
Game Informer scored it 8.25/10, praising its fidelity to the original while noting that the remake puts a spotlight on how overdue the franchise is for something genuinely new. WCCFTech was more enthusiastic, giving it 8.5/10 and describing it as "nostalgic and surprisingly fresh". Shacknews was the outlier with a perfect score, while Gamereactor awarded 9/10.
The most technically interesting addition is Mouse Targeting, a new aiming system that uses the Joy-Con 2's built-in optical sensor. Players place the controller flat on a surface and slide it laterally, with the sensor translating physical movement directly into crosshair position, eliminating the velocity curves that have limited precision aiming on consoles for decades.
Alongside that, the game features fully voiced cutscenes, an orchestral soundtrack, online multiplayer for up to eight players, a new Challenge Mode with additional objectives, and multiple difficulty paths through the Lylat System. A free demo covering the tutorial and the Meteo stage has been available on the Nintendo eShop since 9 June, with save data carrying forward to the full game.
