There's a lot of confusion in Star Citizenland these days and it prompted the dev to announce a roadmap for Squadron 42, the game's singleplayer shooter component. Which means the old plan is scrapped?
Players were expecting Squadron 42 to launch in closed beta in the third quarter of 2020, or at least to hear something since we are, after all, in the third quarter.
Now, we're not sure whether to use fortunately or unfortunately here, because Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) did finally break the silence. What they didn't do is mention the closed beta, which suggests Squadron 42 won't be coming anytime soon.
It turns out that CIG have been working on the new Squadron 42 roadmap at least since March 2020, which seems like a mighty long time to be working on what's realistically a general target-based plan.
"The new Roadmap is something we hinted at in March but because that is still very much in development, we can’t share as much about it as I would like. Believe me when I say I’m personally very eager to release it to you. We took the time to explore options for how we could better represent our progress, and I believe we are getting close to landing in a pretty great spot."
Squadron 42 will be getting a video update soon, which focuses on level design, among other things. They also think the roadmap should change the way they enjoy SQ42 as well as Star Citizen content.
CIG gave the following plan for the immediate future, which should also kick off soon:
- Give an explanation of the goals of our new Roadmap and what to expect from it
- Show a rough mockup of the proposed new Roadmap
- Share a work in progress version of the Roadmap for at least one of our core teams
- And then finally transition to this new Roadmap
