Soon, Ludeon Studios will be releasing RimWorld update 1.3 with new free content and various improvements, including animal fences, breach raids, beards, and many quality-of-life improvements.
Rimworld 1.3 patch was fifteen months in the making, so the patch itself is a big one, with many changes implemented, with an expansion that focuses on belief systems, social roles, rituals, hunts for ancient relics, and cross-cultural interaction.
Now animals are more productive, with more focused roles, but some of them need to be kept in fenced pens and led around by your trusty farmers. It gives the colony a more "ranchy" look and feel instead of just having random cows always wandering through bedrooms or staying in pens via mind control.
Regarding raids, defending will now be more challenging and rewarding, at least with the sense of accomplishment. Enemies will now use a new style of breach raid to get through your defenses. They’ll bring special wall-breaking tools and tunnels into the side of your base instead of using the main entrance. Tribals do this with a new breach-ax, while pirates use grenades, and mechanoids use a new mechanoid type called the termite. Old strategies still exist, however, and these are just variations that will pop up from time to time.
Also, beards are added into the game, with the sole purpose to make characters look cool, as the developers put it.
RimWorld has always been about role-playing. On that note, players choose a theme, or culture, and model their world after it. Perhaps limiting, but it was what the community naturally grew to do. So the developers thought to use this, and make Ideology a thing.
This expansion lets you create a new belief system and act it out in your colony. You can play as tree-worshipping cannibals who carve skulls into every piece of furniture, or blind tunnelers who shun the light, or transhumanists obsessed with perfecting the human form using exotic technology. You can mix and match your belief system's core elements and customize every individual precept, ritual, special social role, venerated animal and weapon, culture and style, unique building, tattoo, clothing, background narrative, god, and yes, even beard preference.
The whole patch, the expansion included, was made with modding in mind. The developers have even tested it with the mods, with them reporting that optimizing mods takes from 5 minutes to a couple of hours of work, depending on the mod. Good news for a game such as this, taking into account both the phenomenal patch and modding compatibility.
