Sony have lifted the curtain on their December PS Plus offer and we're looking at five games, with Codemasters' co-op racer Onrush as the headliner. The second PS4 title is Soma, a sci-fi horror by Frictional while Vita gets Papers, Please.
In Onrush's defence, its that resulted in company-wide layoffs had very little to do with the quality of Codemasters' game. Its pricing was peculiar, for the lack of a better word, and in their effort to widen the demographic appeal, the company neither attracted veteran racing enthusiasts, nor the young and hip crowds.
Its PS Plus appearance is likely to improve Onrush's fortunes and probably not a moment too soon. Rocky starts tend to lock games into vicious cycles whereby fixing matchmaking requires more players, who can't wait to join as soon as you're done fixing matchmaking.
The second PlayStation 4 title on PS Plus' December list is Frictional Games' survival horror Soma. Frictional have made quite the name in this particular genre but if you're not familiar with their work on Penumbra and Amnesia series, then Soma is a good way to recap what they're about.
Soma has players exploring an underwater research facility, whose machines start exhibiting human characteristics. So, something like Blizzard, only less scary. It launched in 2015 to great critical acclaim and is considered their magnum opus, eventually leading to Frictional Games upping their ambition levels and starting work on two games.
Sony threw in two PlayStation 3 to fill out the offer and we're talking about Steredenn, a roguelike shoot 'em up by Pixelnest studio, and Steins;Gate, a visual novel by 5pb. and Nitroplus.
Last but not least are two titles from the PS Vita offer, starting off with Papers, Please, an absolute gem made by 3909 LLC, a.k.a. Lucas Pope and trust us when we say that you owe it to yourself to give it a spin. The second Vita game is Iconoclasts by Konjak, a delightful platformer that launched this year and has already made quite the splash.
