Piranha Bytes is no more according to the Polish entertainment website cdaction.pl. This Embracer-owned studio known for memorable eurojank action RPGs like Gothic, Risen and more recently Elex 2 has shut down after failing to secure an investment that would allow them to continue operating and work on a brand new game.
The report from the Polish outlet also includes some photos showing the office gear like PCs and chairs being packed into boxes, suggesting that the office has already been closed. In addition, it's also claimed that Embracer's funding was only enough to keep the studio open until June 2024.
Following the studio closure, Creative Leads Jennifer und Björn Pankratz have already announced that they've established a new indie studio called Pithead.
"With Pithead Studio we have founded a new indie studio. In the future we will develop immersive and fantastic indie games," they said in the post on social media X.
Piranha Bytes was a small studio that was founded in 1997. They released their first game, Gothic, in 2001 followed by the official sequel and the third game in the series in the coming years.
Piranha Bytes' titles are not known for technical polish and world-class visuals but have found a special place in players' hearts due to their charm and various RPG mechanics.
It's certainly a shame that the studio won't continue creating games but hopefully, the newly founded Pithead studio will carry the torch with familiar but also fresh takes on the action RPG genre.
