Norwegian indie studio Filiokus has announced Talystro, a roguelite deckbuilder that transforms mathematics into its primary weapon. Inspired by genre standards like Slay the Spire and Balatro, the game casts players as Math Mouse fighting against the Necrodicer and an army of corrupted numbers.
Talystro's combat system revolves around matching exact enemy values rather than depleting health bars. Players combine dice rolls with cards containing unfinished calculations, variables, and modifiers to defeat enemies instantly when their total matches the enemy's number. Success requires understanding order of operations and adapting to shifting probabilities each turn.
The game distinguishes itself visually with hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animations inspired by 1920s illustration and animation. Filiokus emphasised craftsmanship and visual expression in the art direction, creating a distinctive aesthetic that celebrates early 20th-century design.
"Talystro is built on our belief that mathematics is fundamentally creative," Filiokus said. "Games are works of art powered by maths, and with Talystro we wanted to bring that connection to the forefront. By combining probability-driven systems with strategic arithmetic, we're inviting players to experiment, adapt, and discover the beauty of problem-solving through play."
The game includes deep progression systems with card and dice upgrades, meta progression unlocks, and starting deck refinement. Players will progress through three distinct acts, each concluding with a unique boss encounter. Filiokus designed Talystro with accessibility in mind, featuring no time-based input requirements and a static camera during gameplay.
Talystro is currently in development for PC via Steam, with a demo launching soon. The game represents Filiokus' second title as the Norwegian studio continues exploring how probability, arithmetic, and play intersect in interactive experiences. Players can wishlist Talystro on Steam to follow development updates.
