Speaking to Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Nioh 2 director Fumihiko Yasuda revealed that Team Ninja won't be working on Nioh 3 in 2021. Yasuda said the next year is a resting point for the franchise.
Nioh 2 was one of the best games of 2020 in terms of review scores but It looks like Nioh developer Team Ninja do not have any plans for another Nioh title in 2021. According to Nioh and Nioh 2 director Fumihiko Yasuda, 2021 will be "a resting point" for the franchise, meaning that any potential new Nioh game won't be coming anytime soon, which will certainly disappoint the fans of the souls-like title.
Here's what Yasuda had to say when asked about the future of Nioh 2 franchise:
"Year of transition. At Team Ninja, the seven years-long development of Nioh series will reach a resting point, and there are several projects that will begin full-scale development in 2021. I plan to change my development style to match my changing lifestyle and concentrate on new titles. As for me personally, I’ll try not to gain any more weight.
Judging by his words, it seems that we won't be seeing a brand new Nioh game for quite some time. As you can see, the team will be busy with other, yet to be announced projects in the future.
What exactly these new games are? Well, it's hard to say right now since the details are pretty scarce but we would love to see a brand new Ninja Gaiden game. We even had a rumour suggesting that the franchise could make a return as an exclusive for Xbox.
Nioh 2’s director Fumihiko Yasuda said even mentioned Ninja Gaiden in one of his interviews. He said the team is fully aware that fans want more Ninja Gaiden games and the core members of the team that worked on the game want to make a brand new title.
