According to reputed Epic Games and PlayStation leaker Billbill-Kun, Sony is reportedly gearing up to announce the next Astro Bot game titled "Astro Bot" at the PlayStation Showcase event in the next two weeks.
The event is yet to be officially announced but reliable industry insider Jeff Grubb stated that Sony plans to host a new State of Play or a full-blown showcase by the end of May, which makes it highly likely that we'll see the new Astro Bot there.
Unlike previous Astro Bot titles, the new Astro Bot game will be exclusively made for the PlayStation 5, excluding PlayStation VR support. This would be the third major Astro Bot game by Sony since the first one was released in 2018.
The history of the Astro Bot series is quite rich. The game started as a demo for the PlayStation 4 console called The Playroom. It featured a mini bot called Astro, a character meant to guide players through the use of the DualShock 4 controller and the PlayStation camera.
Taking the concept of Astro and his fellow bots, Team Asobi and Sony decided to release a standalone platform video game titled Astro Bot Rescue Mission. The game received positive reviews from critics and players alike for its unique use of the DualShock 4 controller.
The success of this title led to Sony releasing a new title called Astro's Playroom for the PlayStation 5 VR, marking the return of Astro.
While Sony had previously mentioned that they have no plans of releasing any major titles in this fiscal year, that does not stop smaller first-party original titles from being announced. Billbill-kun also shared that Sony are also planning to reveal Firewalk Studios' multiplayer shooter Concord at the PlayStation Showcase event.
