The PlaySation London Studio came into being after a merger between Psygnosis's Camden Studios and Team Soho in 2002. The London Studio created the infamous SingStar game series, which became extremely popular and helped broaden the appeal of the PlayStation 2 consoles beyond the typical demographics of young male gamers.
Since then, SingStar has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. Aside from that, the PlayStation London Studio has been a major contributor behind the games for the EyeToy PlayStation 2 webcams and assisted in the development of key Sony titles Killzone 2 and LittleBigPlanet.
PlayStation London Studio shares a heartfelt goodbye
Unfortunately, Sony's mass layoffs at the beginning of 2024 following their decision to cut costs have led to the closure of many PlayStation-led studios, including the PlayStation London Studio. In a recent tweet, the studio issued a heartfelt goodbye message to its fans as it finally closed its doors after 22 years of operation.
The studio pens a heartfelt message stating, "For over twenty years, London Studio has been home to some exceptionally talented and wonderful people in the games industry. As we close the doors and all go forward to new adventures, we wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to all our past and present players and colleagues who have supported us over the years. We’ve had one wild and wonderful journey!"
The London Studio has been the key developer of the SingStar and The Gateaway series for the previous generation consoles. Due to the undying popularity of their SingStar titles, the PlayStation consoles became popular in the female gamer demographic worldwide.
Unfortunately, the Sony layoffs have affected many PlayStation-led studios since the beginning of 2023 and are still continuing to unravel following Sony's drastic cost cuts. Sony's current vision is to divert all resources and attention to their exclusive titles in the coming years.
