Naughty Dog released a statement in which they explain why The Last of Us Part II lacks multiplayer. The devs said that due to enormous singleplayer campaign, they had to make a difficult choice that the game would not include multiplayer.
In the last several days, we got a ton of new details about the upcoming action-adventure The Last of Us Part II. The release date was officially revealed during Sony's State of Play live stream while the devs also talked about the .
Apparently, The Last of Us Part II is the biggest and most ambitious game ever in Naughty Dog's rich history. The singleplayer campaign will be massive but that comes at a cost - The Last of Us Part II won't have multiplayer.
Naughty Dog explained the decision in their latest statement on Twitter. The devs said that as they started developing Factions mode from the original game, their vision grew beyond an additional mode that would come with the huge single-player campaign. In order to support both visions, Naughty Dog made a decision to exclude an online mode from the game.
In their statement, Naughty Dog also promise that players will eventually get some sort of online experience but that won't be included with The Last of Us Part II. At the moment it is unknown what exactly Naughty Dog mean by this but the team said that more details will be shared once the game is ready.
Here is Naughty Dog's statement in full:
"We wanted to address multiplayer in The Last of Us Part II. As we’ve stated, the single-player campaign is far and away the most ambitious project Naughty Dog has ever undertaken. Likewise, as development began on the evolution of our Factions mode from The Last of Us Part I, the vision of the team grew beyond an additional mode that could be included with our enormous single-player campaign. Wanting to support both visions, we made the difficult choice that The Last of Us Part II would not include an online mode.
However, you will eventually experience the fruits of our team’s online ambition, but not as part of The Last of Us Part II. When and where it will be realized is still to be determined. But rest assured, we are as big a fan of Factions as the rest of our community and are excited to share more when it’s ready."
The Last of Us Part II is coming on 21 February 2020 for PS4.
