Metro 2039
Metro 2039 is a first-person action survival horror game developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver, scheduled to launch in February 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The fourth mainline entry in the Metro series, it returns to the Moscow Metro tunnels after Metro Exodus (2019) took the franchise to the open world of post-nuclear Russia, going back to the claustrophobic corridors and faction-driven storytelling of the original games.
Revealed at an Xbox First Look presentation on 16 April 2026, the game reached one million wishlists across Steam and other platforms within two weeks of its announcement. It is built on 4A Games' proprietary 4A Engine, continuing a technological lineage that has made the Metro series a benchmark for PC graphical fidelity for over 15 years.
In Metro 2039, players step into the role of The Stranger, a recluse haunted by violent nightmares of his past who is dragged back into the Metro he swore never to return to. For the first time in the series, the protagonist is fully voiced. Combat retains the series' hallmarks of resource scarcity, weapon maintenance, and tactical decision-making, with new tools including a stealth weapon called the Shatun and a breaching charge expanding the player's options. The development team, majority-based in Ukraine, has described Metro 2039 as the darkest chapter in the series yet, with the story substantially reworked in response to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and informed directly by the team's lived experience of war.
