Damwon Gaming and Top Esports are widely seen as the top contenders for winning League of Legends World Championship 2020 and after the knockout round draw, finals between them seem like a real possibility.
LoL Worlds 2020 playoff round draw was completed right after the group stage concluded with three Korean, three Chinese and two European teams making it into top eight. The rules of the draw were the regular first seed versus second seed matchups and top two teams from the same group can't end up on the same side of the playoff bracket.
For example, Suning is on the top side of the bracket and G2 has to be on the bottom because both of them were in Group A.
Anyway, the teams were drawn into the following matchups:
- Top Esports vs Fnatic
- Suning vs JD Gaming
- Gen G. vs G2 Esports
- Damwon Gaming vs DragonX
The draw provided several interesting possibilities. Provided they don't get knocked out by Asian teams, G2 and Fnatic wouldn't meet before making it all the way to finals.
Meanwhile, Korean and Chinese teams couldn't avoid knockout out one each from their own regions due to the aforementioned rules. JD Gaming couldn't be in the lower part of the bracket because they were grouped with Damwon so that meant they have to face a Chinese team in the first knockout round and possibly another one in the semifinals.
Similarly, the Korean teams will duke it out in the lower part of the bracket before meeting the first Chinese team in the finals. That is, of course, unless European teams pull some major upsets and make it so the Korean and Chinese teams never meet each other in the playoff round.
