LoL Esports: Riot wants to substitute LCS players during walkout

Riot Games is trying to circumvent the massive problems their North American league is facing, just days before it launches.

Following the overwhelming vote for walkout by the League of Legends Championship Series Players Association (LCSPA), Riot Games is trying to undermine their decisions and hamper the players' negotiating power.

As a reminder, the North American teams wanted to slash the academy teams in order to save some budget and Riot Games basically acquiesced, which caused the players to strike.

LCS pros stood in support of NACL where the academy teams compete and decided not to show up for matches until the issue is resolved favourably.

According to Travis Gafford, Riot Games tried to counter this action by bringing up a rule that would allow anyone to be eligible to participate in LCS, as long as they wanted to play for one of the organisations.

There would be no requirements for stage presence either as players would be allowed to play remotely, which makes the entire situation just sound goofy.

An unprecedented number of issues can occur here - from players potentially having connectivity issues to people using illegal software, not to mention that if organisations do scrap up amateur teams this way, they will not be nearly as good as the actual LCS teams.

LCS is supposed to resume on June 1, 2023. Now it remains to be seen whether pro players will join the stage, be replaced by pickup amateurs or if it will happen at all.
