If there is one thing that mages, put into the support role lack, it is gold. Of course, support items do give out bonus gold for damaging an enemy, but to mages who require enough items to delete an enemy in one ability rotation, that is just not enough scaling.
Riot, on that note, are implementing a new rune to League of Legends' season 12, which will act like the old Kleptomancy rune, but so much better, as there is no RNG involved in the process.
The rune's name is First Strike and the description Riot have given us in their latest preseason preview is as follows:
"Damaging an enemy champion with an attack or ability before they do so grants 5 gold and First Strike for 3 seconds, causing your attacks or abilities to deal 12% extra damage against champions, and granting 100% (70% for ranged units) of that damage dealt as gold."
Basically, this rune will allow all champions, played with the Spellthiefs Edge, to do what they have been doing up until now, with more gold in store for themselves.
Though Riot are trying to bring back mages into the midlane, this change may just prove to be the undoing of that plan. Tank supports have been going out of style a bit recently, and this rune will just make the disparity even bigger, with the gold luring in more midlane mages rather than regular enchanter supports.
