It has been a while since Renekton was able to cause the usual problems in the top lane. Riot are trying to get him back into gear with patch 12.9 buffs.
Renekton is an epitome of an early-game top lane bully. At the very least this is supposed to be the case, however, recently even scaling champions have had fewer issues playing against him. Add into the fact that his scaling is abysmal, and you get the picture of his current state.
In patch 12.9 Riot are instating changes to his kit that will propel him back into the limelight:
- Health and AD growth increased.
- W base damage increased, cooldown increased early, and decreased late.
- R base damage increased.
On the developer side of things, this is what they had to say about his changes:
"Renekton has largely disappeared from Pro after the fighter item changes in 12.3. We're looking to add some scaling back so he feels a bit better as the game progresses. We're also reducing the gap between his W and E second max builds since that choice leads to some serious win rate losses in Average play. You heard it here first, crocs are back in fashion."
Interestingly, it seems that Riot are not leaning into his early game bully persona, but are instead giving him increased scaling. This will mean that Renekton will not focus as much on snowballing the game, as his scaling will afford him more options in the late game as well.
