You may have heard that a Borderlands movie is currently in production, and according to the latest news, Kevin Hart has been confirmed to play Roland.
As reported by Hollywood Reporter, Hart has officially signed with Lionsgate to play the Borderlands character, Roland. Cate Blanchett is said to be portraying the role of Lilith, although our understanding is that this is yet to be confirmed.
The gaming world was caught a bit off guard by the announcement, as we normally hear about movie plans from the studios themselves. This time, neither Gearbox nor their eccentric CEO said a word, which is a bit strange.
Nevertheless, this is no shameless cash grab as the Borderlands movie rounded up some pretty big names. Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin has written the script, while the man behind the camera is Eli Roth, who said he's thrilled to be working with Kevin.
"Borderlands is a different kind of role for him, and we are excited to thrill audiences with a side of Kevin they’ve never seen before. He’s going to be an amazing Roland", he said.
If you needed more confirmation of the validity of the project, then look no further than the statement of the president of Lionsgate Group Nathan Kahane, who said, "Kevin has been behind some of the world's biggest blockbusters, and our source material is inspired by one of the world's best-selling video games. We love the way our filmmaking team has adapted this story, and we couldn't be in better creative hands."
While we must admit that the duo of Blanchett and Hart wouldn't have been our first picks for Borderlands, we can't deny it will be interesting to see the project on screen, especially since the franchise begs for hilarious cameos.
Thanks, Hollywood Reporter .
