343 Industries' head Halo honcho has shared a bit of information on the upcoming instalment in the franchise, Halo Infinite, claiming he's extremely pleased with how multiplayer has been coming along, even if there are more changes to come.
O'Connor's update came in response to a discussion on whether Halo Infinite will feature classic gameplay, i.e. no sprinting or armour abilities, or mix it up with Stabilize, Thrusters or others for a hybrid-gameplay type of experience.
He first stressed that he doesn't "stabilize outside of the Ground Pound initialization because [he] can’t master bumper jumper and similar schemes" in Halo 5. Admittedly, he'd be avoiding it even if he could handle the buttons, all of which served as a nice little segway to the important stuff.
"Player style is subjective and broad and must be accounted for in everything from initial design proposals to final schemes and matchmaking performance. Everything is connected and top-tier players are stacked on a pyramid of different styles and preferences. Options help but the core game loop must also be good", O'Connor said.
He also pointed out that making Halo Infinite the "perfect" Halo, one that would appease all the fans equally, is a logical, and mathematical for that matter, impossibility. That being said, he remains "super confident and enthusiastic about how Infinite team is approaching both evolution and legacy."
In terms of his personal Halo preferences, O'Connor says that he's "a filthy casual", since he played and liked every instalment in the franchise. Nevertheless, he concluded with what every game community likes to hear. "What I can do though is listen to this community", he said.
Indeed, considering that Halo has had quite a few flavours, as O'Connor calls them, it would probably be wise to gauge the community's response before deciding on whether some abilities end up in the game.
O'Connor also said that he doesn't discuss details of games that are work in progress, but we sure hope to see some actual gameplay soon.
