With Borderlands 3 gameplay demo fast approaching, Gearbox's CEO Randy Pitchford continues to be the most valuable source of information on the game, and now he revealed that Slag is being replaced with a new type of damage - Radiation.
Asked whether Slag will be making a return in Borderlands 3, Pitchford said that the mechanic has been replaced with something the team think is much better.
"The new "element" damage type, which is like a nuclear radiation effect, has a similar effect to slag (increased vulnerability by those affected) and also has a damage-over-time component", he wrote.
Just in case you're a newcomer, Slag's been introduced in Borderlands 2 as a byproduct of Eridium mining, and while the element didn't deal any damge itself, it boosted the damage from other non-Slag sources.
To be fair, Pitchford could've just said they reworked Slag into something new, and it would've worked just fine for Radiation's arrival into Borderlands 3, but you can't fault the man for being excited over the results of 5+ year development.
One player suggested that Gearbox just kept Slag and simply tacked on a damage-over-time effect to make it viable, but Pitchford made it pretty clear that the move is a result of lengthy deliberations.
While speaking about Borderlands 3's new element, he mentioned that the game will have ample options for the colour blind, which was the case with their earlier games too.
If you're anxious to finally see Borderlands 3 in action, trust us when we tell you that you're not alone, but you won't have to wait long. Gearbox scheduled the for 01 May 2019, at 10am PDT / 6pm BST, although we're certain you'll have plenty more reminders until then.

Pitchford recently stood in defense of Epic's CEO Tim Sweeney and his Epic Game Store, as well as his decision to make Borderlands 3 a timed exclusive.
Sweeney is the most developer-friendly individual in the industry and that Steam have finally got a worthy competitor, which in the long run is great news for everyone.
