Doom and Doom 2 re-releases' success came to an unfortunate halt as they required players to log into Bethesda.net in order to launch them. Desecration of classics with always-online DRM wasn't well received and now it's being removed.
Bethesda recently came under fire for including always online DRM in Doom and Doom 2 re-releases by requiring players to log in to Bethesda.net which was awfully bizarre and distasteful, to say the least. These games were originally released in 1993 and 1994, respectively, so any notion of needing online components makes slightly less sense than calling EA consumer-friendly.
Following the fan backlash, Bethesda finally caved and decided to remove the need for the totally-not-DRM on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The official statement was that the publisher made a mistake since they didn't want to force anyone to log in but the feature was meant for the users of the Slayers Club.
Fast forward to 15 August 2019, Bethesda finally announced they deployed a patch that made the login process optional but noted their work is not done yet. This is because the team is apparently working on reducing the visibility of the optional login so it doesn't inconvenience the players any longer.
When a fan asked once again why the option was there in the first place, Bethesda responded by saying it's reserved for the members of the Slayers Club so they can receive rewards. Mind you, those rewards were not announced yet, we could be talking a randomly generated Roomba map .
Initially forcing always-online DRM for supposed rewards, without having any idea what the rewards are, sounds rather fishy but we will see what the Slayers will get in the future.
This is not the end of Bethesda's troubles with Doom and Doom 2 re-releases though as the games still have issues with sounds. Namely, music is broken as several people pointed out on the official announcement.
