Concurrent player counts are hard to come by on consoles, but Bungie has released some vague figures for the performance of Destiny 2 over the past weekend. Does Destiny 2 have a chance of growing past its current performance on consoles?

AAA publishers and developers usually don't release statistics unless they are something to boast about, and the situation is no different with Bungie for Destiny 2.

It is safe to assume that the 1,2 million concurrent player number was the peak for the weekend, and if shooter player behaviour on PC is anything to go by, the average number should be somewhere half of that during the working days of any given week.

Another thing worth noting is that Destiny 2 might not be able to maintain and grow its player base on account of word-of-mouth or other factors. So far, PC exclusives, similar to PUBG and other Early Access titles have managed to pull this off under a very specific set of circumstances, but for AAA releases most copies are sold during the first week, and numbers rarely go up.

An exception to this would be games like Rainbow Six Siege, but UbiSoft have made that game's slow recovery and climb possible with incredibly regular and arguably substantial updates - something the first Destiny failed to impress with.

Activision and Bungie have probably made their money back by now, with Destiny 2 reaching the top of the UK retail sales charts, in spite of being down 60 per cent on the sales front compared to its predecessor, but the gap might be easily explained with digital sales - if only Activision would publish them.

The PC version will be distributed via Battle.net when it releases on 24 October 2017, so there are more sales to be made, but noone can expect Blizzard to hand out player statistics just like that either.
