Days Gone - Behind the Music takes an in-depth look at the score

Even though music is quite integral to games, it's incredibly easy to disregard its importance once you're hit with that unique taste of a fresh game, but Sony's latest feature provides an in-depth look at what it took to score Days Gone.

Days Gone composer is Nathan Whitehead, whose list of credits is quite lengthy, but the notable mentions include the Purge franchise, Bioshock 2, additional composing on Gears of War games and truly a bunch more.

Whitehead mentions that the setting has played a huge part in the final score, and it's not hard to see why. Not only does the Oregon area boast a rich history, but it's also quite beautiful, both in-game and out of it. 

"To me, it was about the texture of the music matching the texture of the world. Acoustic, organic, a little bit of Americana - I think folk elements like that often are rough around the edges. They have an honesty that felt at home in this world and matched the grit", he says.

Whitehead reminded that the score couldn't just reflect two guys riding on motorcycles, which to be fair wouldn't have needed anything other than a Rammstein best of.  

Instead, it had to reflect the true nature Days Gone's story, which is centred around Deacon St. John and the vortex of emotions he's going through as he's fighting to stay alive. 

"Finding the sound world for the Freakers involved a ton of experimentation. I started bowing everything in my studio - chairs, trash cans, cymbals", he said.

That, believe it or not, was the source for the Freakers melody, as one of Sony's people heard a melody in one of the cymbal-bowed samples.

Whitehead says he simply stretched it out and indeed - what he found is the raw version of the Freakers melody, which is actually a delightful and incredibly honest take at how actual artists seek inspiration.

You know, as opposed to the charlatan methods of just doing weird stuff while looking enlightened, and attributing it to mystical cosmic forces or whatever.

Days Gone has gotten decent reviews at launch, albeit Sony's fans insist that reviewers have not given it a fair shake. Many of them argue we're looking at a masterpiece in the scope of God of War, which we don't think is even open to the debate.

What we will concede, however, is that Days Gone is a good, solid game, a category that seems horribly underrated these days, and obviously - it packs plenty of soul throughout it.
