With two days left until launch, as well as the review embargo up, Days Gone is getting the final pieces of Sony's trailer and director comment features. This time, they're aimed at the game's hordes of freakers, and how to handle them.
Days Gone's director John Garvin said that the horde was one of the first concepts that came in developing the game, stemming from the concept art you see on the image above.
"Where the hordes live, which typically is at mass grave sites that you can find throughout the Farewell Wilderness. It's really unsettling to see a hundred Freakers sort of swarming over [a mass grave site] like crows at a garbage dump", he added.
Freakers' energy comes at a thermal price though, which explains why they run much better at night or in rain.
Garvin likened Days Gone's horde to a flood, that advances relentlessly, leaving it to players to find ways to whittle it down, before taking your sweet time with the last one. Considering Deacon's knack for customising baseball bats, the last one is probably going to be a swing anyway.
Still, the game's creative director Jeff Ross says a bit of brains won't hurt, adding, "One time I saw a guy beat a horde with just three bullets. He had a plan. He had some strategies in mind, and he executed."
Days Gone players should also know that speeding into freakers isn't really a great tactic. "One of the fastest ways to die in Days Gone is to ride your bike into the middle of a horde. And I've seen players do that", Garvin said.
We've assembled a of Days Gone, and while it doesn't really paint a stellar picture of SIE Bend's game, it doesn't say it's awful either. While it may not bring much new to the table, what it does it mostly does solidly.
