Nostalgia engines are about to be refuelled during Gamescom when Kalypso Media present Commandos 2 and Praetorians HD Remasters. Before that, however, we are treated to a glimpse of what the remasters will offer through two trailers.

Kalypso Media are bringing two classics out of the forgotten vault and giving them proper makeovers so the pixelation is not as visible. Praetorians is a proper real-time tactics game that has some RTS elements but it was unique enough that people are hyped to see a remaster 16 years after the original release.

Meanwhile, Commandos 2 is following a similar formula by going down the real-time tactics road but focuses on players utilising a small unit of soldiers with unique gear and skillsets, rather than a proper army detachment.

The similarities in the games didn't fall out of the sky randomly though - they were both developed by Pyro Studios. Unfortunately, the studio never became a powerhouse that could keep producing unique content and eventually merged with another studio, forming a mobile game developer.

Kalypso Media hopped in to save the day for the nostalgic fans in 2018 by acquiring rights to Commandos 2, Praetorians and Imperial Glory which resulted in the remastered versions of the first two games.

The changes are not only eye candy though - control schemes will be updated for both mouse and keyboard as well as gamepad inputs.

Given Commandos series' difficulty, it will be interesting to see if it will be possible to actually make control schemes that will make Commandos 2 enjoyable on consoles as sticky situations often require players to be quick on both their wit and mechanics.

Kalypso Media are not discouraged by these challenges though as they announced Commandos 2 and Praetorians HD Remasters will come to Android, iOS and Nintendo Switch after the release for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Speaking of the latter three, their release window is set for Q4 2019 but the exact release date will probably be revealed during Gamescom 2019.
