Players who purchased Resident Evil 7: Biohazard now actually own the game as well, since Capcom decided to remove Denuvo DRM from Steam. Capcom didn't make any announcements regarding the removal, which happened two years after release.

Capcom's removal of Denuvo from Resident Evil 7: Biohazard came as a surprise for everyone, but not for the right reasons. Gamers found themselves mostly surprised that the DRM got removed two years after the release, when they thought it would never happen since people have been asking for Denuvo removal for the entirety of 2018.

Specifics of the deal between Denuvo and Capcom are not public, but this development may shed some light on it, as it's easy to assume the companies had a contract for two years. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard's prime selling time has passed long ago and there was no reason for Capcom to keep Denuvo integrated afterwards unless they made a contract for two years or paid upfront for the duration.

Then again, it is unknown whether or how much Capcom benefitted from the deal, since the anti-tamper tech was cracked a mere week after Resident Evil 7 release. On the other hand, it was considered to be the biggest game in the franchise until recently, when Resident Evil 2: Remake overtook it on the bestseller throne.

Meanwhile, the removal of Denuvo could make many benchmark enthusiasts happy as they can now test Resident Evil 7's performance before and after the going DRM-free. Still, it will be those who purchased the game who stand to gain the most as games with DRMs are essentially just rentals, while having a DRM-free game is closer to proper ownership of an item they paid for.

Those who may be encouraged to buy Resident Evil 7: Biohazard by the removal of Denuvo should be aware that this one is a bit different from other entries in the Resident Evil series. It doesn't feature any of the well-known protagonists, except Chris Redfield late in the game and it is played from the first person perspective.
