After months of speculation about Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's zombilicious upcoming mode, Activision and Treyarch finally spilt the beans, and they'll even let you try it out for free.
Outbreak arrives as part of Season 2 of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone, but no need to worry if you belong to the latter camp as the dev prepared a freebie technically for everyone.
"Celebrate the launch of Season Two with free access to a brand-new Zombies experience, action-packed Multiplayer maps, and more in Black Ops Cold War from February 25 to March 4", Activision wrote.
Outbreak promises to significantly shake up the standard Zombies experience, as players get to explore areas around the Ural Mountains, i.e. in the Outbreak zone, and assist Requiem's divisions in completing their objectives.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players will find that there are no set paths to objectives, so they're free to get there however they wish. There are jump pads that cost 500 essence, which can be quite lucrative if you choose to collect essence containers on your way down.
Once there, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players must complete one of five available operations - Defend, Escort, Retrieve, Eliminate or Holdout.
To make it more challenging, Treyarch made sure that surrounding these regions is the Dark Aether's volatile cousin, the Phase, which can render familiar areas deadly and bring back previously out-of-bound zones.
Activision promises a brand new meta where players will earn a bunch of XP and three types of Aetherium Crystals:
- Raw Aetherium Crystals – Requiem agents know this resource well. These are used to upgrade Skills for Weapon Classes, Field Upgrades, Perks, and Ammo Mods through the first three Tiers of power.
- Refined Aetherium Crystals [NEW] – A more matured crystal structure. A greater energy source used to upgrade Skills to Tier IV.
- Flawless Aetherium Crystals [NEW] – This is the highest maturity an Aetherium Crystal can reach. This incredibly powerful resource is used to upgrade Skills to Tier V.
