Gearbox Software's Borderlands 3 dev team toyed with the idea of bringing Handsome Jack back for the sequel. The plan was eventually scrapped due to a fan-made video and thus - Troy and Tyreen Calypso came into the world.
Borderlands 3 came super close to having Handsome Jack as its main antagonist. Here's the scoop: you see, in the early days of BL3 development, the devs considered bringing the man himself back to be the villain in the new game.
Randy Varnell, a creative director and managing producer for narrative at Gearbox, said that there were actual plans to bring Jack back *spoilers I guess* from the dead. The team decided against resurrecting the awesome antagonist after watching a fan-made video detailing the "7 Things We Don't Want To See In Borderlands 3".
Near the top of the list - at number 3 - was Handsome Jack so that was the end of that. The devs listened. The Handsome idea was scrapped and from its ashes arose the Calypso Twins. (cue the sighs)
The Twins aren't the most popular of villains ever. Rather, the fans really did not enjoy Jack's successors. There are some back and forths to be had here, but not choosing to go with a well-known baddie from the franchise earns the dev team a plus in the Alt Char Book of Admirable Decisions.
Handsome Jack is still referenced in Borderlands 3 - through its DLC pack named "Moxxi's Heist of The Handsome Jackpot". The DLC went live on 19 December 2019 and is the first of four paid campaign add-ons that are included in the Borderlands 3 Super Deluxe Edition and Season Pass . You can also purchase the DLC a-la-carte .
