Bethesda Game Studios is looking to hire a monetisation expert for a mystery AAA 'freemium' title. The listing appeared on the job board of parent company ZeniMax and the available position is open for their newly created Montreal studio.
Bethesda Game Studios is currently "pushing the bleeding-edge of AAA freemium game development", according to a listing that appeared on ZeniMax Media's jobs board. The job listing is asking for a Game Performance Manager with focus on the monetisation aspects of game design.
Bethesda
The listing does not refer to the upcoming ESO: Morrowind expansion since that is being developed by ZeniMax Online Studios. This means that Bethesda Game Studios is working on an yet unannounced AAA online game, most likely within their new Montreal studio.
Anyone interested in the project should have a minimum of 5 years of experience behind their monetisation belt. Considering the rest of the listed requirements for the position, Bethesda is looking for someone with a successful development cycle on some other bleeding-edge AAA pay-to-win project on their resume.
Nintendo
AltChar's best guess is that Bethesda and ZeniMax are striding further down the road of becoming a Blizzard alternative.
First there was the Elder Scrolls Online MMORPG (a WoW clone); followed by the Elder Scrolls Legends CCG (a shot at the Hearthstone money pot); the Bethesda Game Launcher was introduced in the meantime (quite similar to the Battle.net client); and Fallout 4 was more FPS than RPG, but lacked the extremely lucrative microtransaction-heavy multiplayer component. The next logical step was offering potential customers an Overwatch alternative, in the form of Quake Champions.
Openly looking into pay-to-win techniques is no crime by itself, and is usually a good source of money - but is generally frowned upon by gamers left and right. We will know more about the project when a more official announcement is issued for the new project.
