Illaoi is one of the Champions announced for 2XKO, joining the roster alongside Yasuo, Ekko, Darius, and Ahri. First introduced in League of Legends, Illaoi's commanding presence is rivalled only by her unshakable faith.
In 2XKO, just like in League of Legends, Illaoi is a powerful tank who wields her conjured tentacles to deliver heavy-hitting attacks. As the prophet of the Great Kraken, she wields a massive, golden idol to extract the spirits of her enemies, shattering their perception of reality in the process.
Anyone who dares to challenge the "Truth Bearer of Nagakabouros" quickly learns that Illaoi is never alone in battle—the god of the Serpent Isles fights alongside her.
All of Illaoi's powers and abilities currently revealed
While the full control scheme for Illaoi in 2XKO hasn't been revealed yet, here's a general overview of how her kit functions, based on what developers have shared:
Main Damage Mechanism:
Illaoi's primary source of damage comes from her tentacles, divided into two distinct ability sets: S1 and S2.
S2 Specials:
Illaoi's S2 Specials allow her to summon tentacles on the map, similar to her abilities in League of Legends. Her Forward Assist acts like her S2 Special, ideal for controlling mid-range combat.
S1 Specials:
These abilities let Illaoi activate her tentacles for additional attacks when her opponent is within the "Splash Zone." If they're out of range, she can teleport the nearest tentacle towards her opponent before launching an attack.
S2 Super: Wrath of Nagakabouros:
This ability summons large tentacles to smash the ground around Illaoi's opponent. If there are existing tentacles, they will also strike. However, if Illaoi or her partner get hit while this ability is active, all tentacles disappear.
S1 Super: Crashing Waves:
Illaoi uses this ability to lift her opponent, swing them overhead, and slam them into the ground twice. If a tentacle is present during this move, holding S1 allows her to reposition it.
Ultimate Ability: Test of Spirit:
This is Illaoi's ultimate attack. She sends her opponent's soul to the depths to face Nagakabouros. It's a fast mid-range move, ideal for ending combos. It's also invincible at the start, making it difficult to counter in intense situations.
Illaoi's mechanics and how to play her in 2XKO
Illaoi's abilities extend beyond just her tentacle attacks. In 2XKO, she has several slamming moves, much like her skills in League of Legends, allowing her to inflict significant damage on her foes. According to developer Caroline Montano, the goal was to ensure Illaoi didn't feel like a "puppet character" despite her tentacle-based mechanics.
Her tentacle attacks serve as a reward for players who are active and keep the pressure on their opponents. These tentacles can be removed easily, as a single hit from an enemy is enough to make them disappear.
2XKO emphasises teamwork, requiring players to work together to knock out opponents. Illaoi remains a threat even if she's been knocked out or is off-screen, thanks to her tentacles. They persist in supporting her teammate, providing a strategic advantage even in her absence.
Even while KO’d, Illaoi can also use Last Stand to activate her ultimate and “beat the soul” out of whoever is currently battling it out.
When can we expect to play 2XKO?
2XKO doesn't have a confirmed release date yet, but Riot Games plans to showcase the game at this year's EVO Japan. Attendees will get their first opportunity to play with Illaoi and other characters during the event.
Riot has also announced that later this year, home-based playtesting for 2XKO will begin, allowing fans who can't attend EVO Japan to fully test out Illaoi and the rest of the roster. This should give a broader audience a chance to experience the game before its official release.
