It's been a long, long wait, but Bethesda's big sci-fi RPG is finally here. At the time of writing this guide, you'll only need to wait for a couple of more hours to finally start exploring Starfield and its massive universe.
While you wait you may want to check out some basic tips, tricks and facts that will surely come in handy before you play the game. If you followed Starfield closely, most of these details will probably be familiar but for those who didn't watch every video or read every Bethesda blog post about the game, some general knowledge about what to expect and how the game works can't hurt.
So, without further ado, let's check ten tips, tricks and facts that you need to know before playing Starfield.
This is a Bethesda RPG, not a full-blown space sim
This is something you must accept before you play Starfield. This is a single-player RPG like Skyrim and Oblivion. It's not a full-fledged space exploration simulation like No Man's Sky or Star Citizen. The game doesn't focus on seamless transitions between planet and space nor does it allow you to manually land your ship.
Instead, it offers what Bethesda games have always offered - great stories and unprecedented worlds and exploration.
Most of the game is procedurally generated
The Starfield you play and the Starfield that someone else plays will be very different. Not only that, but if you start a second playthrough, the game will send you to different locations to complete quests, which is quite fascinating.
Basically, Starfield will randomise things in the main story missions like objectives so you'll never go to the same place again. Landing sites on the planets and the points of interest are procedurally generated too. Obviously, there is plenty of handcrafted content too for all Bethesda fans.
You can work for multiple factions at the same time
Starfield won't lock you out of one faction if you decide to join another. So for example, you will be able to work for space pirates Crimson Fleet but also Freestar Rangers at the same time. However, factions will react to your decisions so some may not like that you're working for a different faction, especially on things that they have an interest in.
Some planets are pretty much dead
Not every planet in Starfield is rich with life and interesting things to see. The majority of planets in the game are empty and don't have any human or alien life. However, these planets can be rich with resources so you definitely don't want to skip them just because there's nothing to shoot at on their surface.
There is plenty of space magic
Yes, Starfield does feature magic! Bethesda did not talk about this much but the magic is one of the main parts of the game. As you play the story, you will start a quest that will help you discover these powers. There are a lot of powerful abilities in the game that you can collect as you explore the universe.
You can't respec your character so choose your skills wisely
Sadly, Starfield does not feature respec so you won't be able to reset your skills during your playthrough. Once you spend points on a certain skill it stays with your character forever but the good news is that you can pretty much unlock all skill points in one playthrough if you earn enough experience.
You can romance and even marry some companions
Starfield has a couple of romance quests that can end up with marriage. So for example, you can romance Sarah Morgan, one of the first companions you meet in the game. There are plenty of other options too and with the right words and steps, your relationship can become something even bigger.
Companions will not support and follow you blindly
Every companion in Starfield has its own moral values and thoughts on the world around you. This pretty much means that a pacifist won't stay on your ship if you're a murdering maniac. On top of this, some of the decisions you make during quests will also have an impact on your relationship with companions, so make sure to think before you do something crazy.
Upgrade your ship so you can reach galaxies far far away
Ships play a major role in Starfield. You use ships to travel the universe but before you set your course to distant corners of space, you'll have to increase jump distance so you can reach those places. You can upgrade your ship in cities like New Atlantis. If you don't want to spend money on upgrades, stealing a bigger and more powerful ship is also an option.
Take your time
This one is pretty much general advice we give for most games. Don't rush the story! This is the first Bethesda RPG in a long, long time so take your time, explore everything there is to explore, visit planets, complete side quests and more.
Who knows how long we'll have to wait for another Bethesda RPG so take it all in!
