Significant improvements to the surrender system are on the horizon in League of Legends Patch 13.21, introducing more flexibility to the process, says Riot.

Throughout this year, Riot Games has been revamping core mechanics and quality-of-life features within League of Legends to enhance the overall gameplay experience. These improvements have a wider range of in-game pings, adjustments to champion interactions, automated muting, ranked penalties, and, most notably, changes to the surrender system.

Surrendering plays an integral role in online competitive gaming, particularly in ranked matches where departure from the game is not permissible. Surrendering provides players with a means to expedite the conclusion of a seemingly unwinnable match and avoid wasting additional time.

In League of Legends, before the last round of surrender changes, the requirement for surrendering in a ranked match was unanimous consent from all five members of a team. However, a significant drawback of this system was the potential for one player to deliberately withhold consent, essentially holding the game hostage and preventing a swift surrender.

Surrender system changes are coming

To address this issue, Riot Games implemented a change that reduced the unanimity requirement from five players to four. With the forthcoming update, players will no longer need unanimous consent during the early AFK surrender stage, thereby facilitating earlier match resolutions.

In the conventional course of a League of Legends match, forfeiting is not permissible before 15 minutes of play. However, when a player goes AFK prior to this 15-minute mark, the team is granted the option to surrender prematurely.

Previously, early surrender required unanimous agreement from the remaining players on a team. However, the impending changes will enable players to end the game early, even without unanimous consent.

This adjustment brings both advantages and drawbacks. On the plus side, if there is an AFK player on a team, the reduction in LP due to a loss will not be as severe as before, and players can conveniently exit a losing match. Conversely, the downside is that players may opt to surrender matches they could potentially win.

The impact of these changes on the broader League of Legends community remains to be seen as the new system is implemented. The changes aim to strike a balance between avoiding wasted time in lost games and ensuring fair gameplay.
