The Phantom Oxcart quest in Dragon's Dogma 2 offers a unique twist compared to typical monster-killing missions. In this quest, players must delve into the murky world of the slave trade and assume the role of a Pawn to uncover the truth behind the mysterious activities.

Unlike other quests, there are no explicit prompts to guide players through this process. However, you should avoid attempting to tackle this quest as a Trickster.

Although the Trickster vocation has its strengths in various situations, this particular quest doesn't play to its advantages. With no access to your Pawns or weapons, defending yourself as a Trickster becomes significantly more challenging and time-consuming compared to other classes.

Opting for a different class will likely yield better results and make the quest more manageable.

How to initiate the Phantom Oxcart Quest in Dragon's Dogma 2?

To initiate the Phantom Oxcart quest in Dragon's Dogma 2, you must first advance through the main story until you reach Bakbattahl. Once you've reached this point, return to Vernworth to begin the quest. You can opt to use oxcarts for fast travel or employ a Portcrystal to expedite your journey back to Vernworth.

After you arrive in Vernworth, make your way to the Western Oxcart Station. There, you'll overhear locals discussing a peculiar oxcart that materialises only after sunset, initiating the side quest. To progress, wait until nightfall by resting at a nearby campfire, the inn, or within your own dwelling if you've acquired one.

Where is the Phantom Oxcart located in Dragon's Dogma 2?

To locate the Oxcart, you'll need to exit through the eastern gate of Vernworth and continue going along the main road till you reach the marked area on the map. You'll notice the distinctive blue glow of the oxcart. Eavesdrop on the conversation between a soldier and the driver, revealing that the oxcart is carrying Pawn slaves.

As you approach, the soldier will attempt to flee. Intercept him and subdue him. He'll surrender a document and plead for release, even offering a sum of gold in exchange.

Now the decision is entirely up to you. While you have the option to take the soldier to prison, the offer of 5,000 gold is certainly tempting. It's worth noting that Dragon's Dogma 2 lacks any morality system, so there are no repercussions either way.

As soon as you return to Vernworth, deliver the document to either Captain Brant or Sven. Since Captain Brant can often be found at the Stardrop Inn during the night in Dragon's Dogma 2, it's more convenient to visit him there.

Once you hand over the document, Brant will propose that you track the oxcart to its destination. There are now two ways to do this. You can either disguise yourself as a Pawn or follow discreetly from a distance.

However, some players have encountered bugs when attempting the latter option, so it's advisable to opt for the Pawn disguise method.

Disguising yourself as a pawn

Return to the Phantom Oxcart and unequip all your weapons and armour. Once you're stripped down to your underwear, approach the driver, and engage in conversation. He will then allow you to join the other Pawns on board. This action will unlock the "Are We There Yet" achievement in Dragon's Dogma 2.

Continuing your journey

During the journey, the driver will verbally mistreat everyone aboard. Eventually, goblins will attack the oxcart. Remember not to equip any weapons or armour, as doing so will compromise your cover. Since the monsters are weak, use your fists to deal with them effectively.

Passing the Inspection

After dealing with the goblins, return to the oxcart and continue your journey. Upon reaching Checkpoint Rest Town, you will be asked to disembark so the guards can inspect the cargo.

During the inspection, the guards will start to punch you and the other Pawns to test your obedience. It's crucial to remain passive and not react in any way to avoid blowing your cover.

After enduring the abuse, a different set of guards will intervene, putting an end to the mistreatment. Once the inspection is over, reboard the oxcart and proceed to Bakbattahl.

Upon arrival, another group of guards will inspect the slaves and eventually recognise your true identity. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to prevent this, and all guards will turn hostile.

The last fight

Now that the guards have turned hostile, you can equip your weapons and armour to defend yourself. The Pawns will assist you in the fight, although some players have reported a glitch where their helpers stand idle during the battle. The fight against the guards will be difficult due to their numbers.

If you manage to survive the encounter, you will obtain the labour Requisition Orders as a reward. Return to Vernworth and deliver the Labour Requisition Orders to Captain Brant, concluding the side quest.

What are the rewards for completing the Phantom Oxcart quest?

Upon completing the side quest, you will be rewarded with 4000 experience points, 14,500 gold, and the Ring of Momentum.

While it's uncertain if your actions will completely halt the slave trade, every effort counts towards making a positive change.
