Black Desert Online is a sandbox action MMORPG developed and published by South Korean studio Pearl Abyss, originally released in Korea in 2015 before launching in North America and Europe on 3 March 2016. Built on Pearl Abyss' proprietary engine, the game is set in a high fantasy world torn between two rival powers — the Republic of Calpheon and the Kingdom of Valencia - as players uncover the secrets of the mysterious Black Stones. It has since expanded to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with native ports launched on 26 June 2025, bringing improved load times and current-gen performance to console players.

Beyond its fast-paced, skill-based combat and large-scale guild siege warfare, Black Desert Online boasts one of the most elaborate life skill systems in the genre, with fishing, cooking, horse training, alchemy, sailing, and farming all available as deep parallel pursuits. The game also features what is widely regarded as the most detailed character customisation system of any MMORPG currently available. With a buy-to-play model in Western markets and all major content updates delivered free of charge, it has attracted over 55 million players globally across PC, console, and mobile.
