There's plenty of excitement around Infinity Ward's reboot of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, as well as some criticism, but we're confident that fans of the classic will breathe a sigh of relief upon learning Blackout is not part of it.
In fact, Treyarch and Activision caught some flak for the first Call of Duty title without a singleplayer campaign, which they insisted was never part of the plan, even though recent reports suggest this is not the case.
Anyway, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer design director Joe Cecot told IGN that Infinity Ward are focusing on a different kind of experience.
"We really focused on Modern Warfare, authentic and gritty, realistic weapons, and it's a different experience. It's really...just about pulling back to Modern Warfare and keeping that pure", he said.
Fans of the original are sure to take this as good news, especially after some of them admittedly skipped Black Ops 4 altogether, although we're sure that there will be some battle royale fans who'll eventually ask for it.
Unfortunately for them, the dev's sights are firmly set elsewhere. "[Infinity Ward are] big fans of battle royale. We're excited for large player counts and things like that, but right now we're really focused on core multiplayer", Cecot said.
That's not to say Infinity Ward will be skimping on player numbers, as their recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer demo teased 20v20 gameplay, but they're gunning even higher - 100 players and more.
Cecot said that they pushed their network engineers to allow for as many players as possible. "On the technical side, we've had to do a ton of work on the multiplayer side to make things more efficient so we could push the player counts higher and higher and higher", he said.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's battle royale mode, Blackout, has had quite a promising start, expanding on Fortnite's simplicity with various addons and such, but seems to have lost some wind to Respawn's battle royale Apex Legends.
