Tim Schafer: Microsoft bying Double Fine gave us a renewed focus

Double Fine's head honcho and master gamesmith Tim Schafer recently gave an interview, where he discussed what the future holds for Psychonauts 2 and the studio itself. He claims that Microsoft's purchase has given them renewed focus.

If you were following this year's E3, you may have seen Schafer pledge his support to Microsoft, jokingly suggesting they're ready to make Halo, Forza and Excell stuff, but this is not what the purchase of Double Fine was about.

"I think the good thing about being acquired is you don't have to think about these monetization schemes in terms of just strictly monetization, but what would be best for players, what would be best for the game", Schafer told Gamasutra.

You could say Microsoft and Double Fine went full circle after the former backed out of the deal to publish the original Psychonauts back in 2004, only to be reunited in a similar way 15 years later.

"They felt bad about it, and now they made good on that. So all is forgiven", he added jokingly.

Microsoft's new leadership really has the company firing on all cylinders and Schafer has been told this is something that trickles all the way from the top and CEO Satya Nadella.

The fact they've been bought, however, doesn't mean Double Fine will be changing a thing, quite the contrary - Schafer insists they've been given free rein.

"I think they've had a commitment to a new way of acquiring companies which is, kind of an unplugged studio approach, where they're not merged into the larger corporate entity. They don't just auto-hire---take a bunch of employees and make them Microsoft employees. They want us to retain our identity, our spirit, that's what they want us to bring into the fold", he said.

Asked whether he thinks that the 3D platformer genre is underrepresented at the moment, Schafer said, "I love brightly-colored stylized graphics with a lighthearted character and some comedy. I would love to see more of in games. But we're happy to provide it and fill that hole."
