Nintendo made it no secret that the US holiday shopping season represents a large chunk of their annual earnings and the company had a season to remember, selling more than $250 million worth of gear from Black Friday to Cyber Monday.
We're sure no one will be more cheerful than Nintendo, since this is a 45 per cent increase from the same period last year. What better way to rinse the bitter taste of 2017's shortcomings than with a few records, and yes - there's one we found quite notable.
Switch's US sales numbers are up by 115 per cent compared to 2017, which makes it the best selling week Nintendo's little guy. Moreover, it has become the company's best selling console in the US for that period, taking up the mantle from the Wii.
Of course, many of Wii's milestones are likely to stay out of Switch's reach for a bit longer, given its obvious age advantage and all. That being said, Nintendo can finally say they've got the product capable of closing in on those numbers - a statement which gains in importance the longer you look at a Wii U console.
The company also revealed Switch's lifetime sales and we're looking at 8.2 million units sold in the US in the 20 months it has been on the market. In comparison, the Wii U only managed measly 3.08 million while the GameCube sold 4.3 million. Unfortunately, the Wii cannot be caught, not by the Switch at least, because it flogged 10.85 million units in its first 20 months in the US.
Nintendo's software sales saw growth across the board as well. Pokemon: Let's Go's Pikachu and Eevee have sold 1.5 million units since their launch in November, and we reckon they helped move a Switch or two. In general, the company's first-party titles ended up selling 78 per cent better than in 2017.
CEO of Nintendo America Reggie Fils-Aime recently said that the company's traditionally good holiday performance is down to several reasons, first of which being that they make great gifts. Well, I guess you can say that again.
