Nintendo's hybrid console that launched in March 2017 has now officially sold more units than Wii U managed to move during its entire lifetime. The Switch has sold 7.23 million units in the last quarter alone, and it went on to sell a total of 14.86 million consoles until the end of December.
Nintendo's latest console surpassed the in early December, 2017, so Nintendo tweaked its forecast for the financial year ending in March, 2018: with a 33.3 percent greater operating profit of 160 billion yen (£1.04 billion) from 1.02 trillion yen (£6.63 billion) in revenue.
"Switch sales during the holiday season were stronger than expected in Japan, the United States and Europe," said Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima at an earnings briefing.
Switch's software sales are on par with the console, thanks to a high attachment rate. To put things into perspective, has sold over 9 million copies since it launched in October. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have sold 7.33 million and 6.7 million copies respectively.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has, at one point in time, sold more copies than the Switch itself because the fans kept buying one copy to play on their new console and another to have as a collector's item.
In the light of recent events, Nintendo has stated that the new expected numbers for the Switch are 20 million this year.
