General manager of Ubisoft Asia Steve Miler said that Assassin's Creed: Odyssey has a good chance to become the best the most popular Assassin's Creed title ever in Japan, which he attributed to the game's newly implemented RPG elements.

Ever since the first instalment of Ubisoft's hit franchise launched back in 2007, Assassin's Creed has grown into more than just a game, what with the fans of the assassins-templars tussle having organised meetings, practising parkour and whatnot.

Miller thinks Assassin's Creed has a solid following in Japan and that it's one of the most successful western games in the country. The franchise's exploration of various historical settings and eras, along with the undeniably cool look of hooded assassin's wielding dual blades obviously made sure of that.

Different cultural sensibilities often translate to gaming and with Japanese gamers traditionally being sticklers for RPGs, Miller thinks Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is likely to be right up their alley. "Odyssey is more RPG-like than any previous Assassin’s Creed, so we think the appeal of this game will reach beyond the core fans", he said.

Regardless of popularity though, the franchise seems to have gone a bit stale prior to Origins, with arguably the same formula being dragged through various historical settings, with a slight inventive detour in the excellent Black Flag. Assassin's Creed: Origins did well to shake the formula up and Odyssey is likely to continue in this vein.

In fact, and this is just a personal opinion mind you, Odyssey might be the Creed title I've been most excited for in a while, not least for dumping the turtling tactics from Origins. In case you didn't know, Alexios and Kassandra don't sport any shields, which is quite ironic for Spartans but I couldn't care less - skilled combat is the name of the game here.
