In a rare example of remaster related sanity Square Enix have abandoned the recently announced Tomb Raider Trilogy remaster. Sanity does not equal decency though - the company blamed its underlings for unsanctioned remasterception.

Pardon the free digs at Tomb Raider but with the game already having been remastered before, it was getting ridiculous. Besides, by now the Tomb Raiders of old are outdated games that will require much more than just virtual reality gimmicks to justify the cost and time.

It appears Square Enix ultimately figured out the same, even though their weaselling out of the situation makes for a very undignified exit. The company has since taken down any Tomb Raider remaster related videos but left its minions to take the blame.

Namely, it was Crystal Dynamics who came out and took the blame, saying that Tomb Raider "remasters in question were initiated and advertised without seeking approval. As such, they were never officially sanctioned."

Realtech VR, the guys behind the only remotely viable purpose behind the title, tweeted a somewhat bitter message, referring to the ordeal as "this episode". In fact, they say they'll focusing on Augmented Reality titles on iOS and virtual reality stuff on PC.

Despite Square Enix's slippery exit stage left, we still think that the decision is the right one. I mean, the amount of remasters on the market is already insane and, seeing as how this is not the first time Tomb Raider's been remade - how many times more do we have to rehash a game?

Now, maybe if we were talking about an absolute gem of a game, which warrants the historical upkeep due to any sort of creative or technical relevance, then maybe, just maybe we'd let the second remaster slide. Tomb Raider is most certainly not that game.

Besides, it was never that great to begin with. There, I said it.
