In spite of all the drama surrounding it, or perhaps even because of it, Naughty Dog's launch of The Last of Us Part 2 is the biggest physical launch this year.
To be fair though, The Last of Us Part 2 was always going to be huge. PlayStation Blog's reader survey crowned its predecessor, which launched in 2013, as the PlayStation game of the decade .
It managed to beat the likes of God of War from 2018, so Naughty Dog's story clearly struck a chord with many PlayStation owners, the sort that doesn't vane with time.
As for The Last of Us Part 2's launch weekend, its physical sales in the UK beat Nintendo's Switch exclusive Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which held the title of 2020's biggest release. It did so by about 40 per cent, so it's not as if it was a close fight or anything.
Naughty Dog are clearly on fire here, as they even managed to beat their own record on Sony's platform. The Last of Us Part 2 beat Uncharted 4: A Thief's End as the fastest-selling PlayStation release in this generation.
Granted, it did so by a mere 1 per cent, but we're sure Naughty Dog won't mind. Who wouldn't want to be the studio signing some of PS4's true classics?
We're talking about physical sales here, and we reckon digital ones will make Naughty Dog look even better here, but we'll probably have to wait for Sony's fiscal reports to hear about that.
The rest of the UK's physical sales top 10 is as follows:
- The Last of Us Part 2
- Ring Fit Adventure
- FIFA 20
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- COD: Modern Warfare
- GTA5
- Minecraft
- 51 Worldwide Games
- Pokémon Sword
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
