The Division 2 will feature an in-game store where players will be able to buy cosmetics only. Shortly after the launch, Ubisoft will add loot boxes that also include apparel items, although they will never provide any type of advantage.
Ubisoft have revealed their monetisation plans for The Division 2 in their latest Year 1 content update. On launch, there will be two ways to purchase items in The Division 2.
One of these options is the in-game Apparel Store where players will be able to directly purchase cosmetics for Premium Credits which are the in-game currency. These credits can be bought with real-world money.
Ubisoft describe the store as an option for those "who wish to know exactly what they are buying and are looking to acquire a specific cosmetic item".
Furthermore, the second option to buy cosmetics will be added after the launch. Apparel Caches is Ubisoft's fancy name for loot boxes which will contain only cosmetic items.
Players won't be able to earn weapons, crafting materials or other gear through these caches and acquiring one will never provide any type of advantage.
The publisher promise that items found in loot boxes can also be earned through missions and various activities.
Ubisoft also confirmed all the details about The Division 2's Year 1 post-launch plans. During the first year, The Division 2 will receive three free episodes and specialisations which will be available seven days earlier to those who buy the Year 1 pass.
If this sounds a bit confusing, and you're wondering why would you pay for free content, well, in addition to early access, you'll also get a couple of additional bounties and projects, backpack trophies, one emote and an outfit.
Many would say that early access to powerful specialisations is an unfair advantage over those who don't buy Year 1 pass but Ubisoft's idea is to introduce a similar system to Rainbow Six Siege's operator unlocking.
This basically means that you either buy The Division 2's Year 1 pass and get instant access to specialisations or play the game to unlock them.
