Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Some new footage from Middle-earth: Shadows of War has arrived today showing some of the game's environments that stretch beyond Mordor, with Hollywood-style ambiguous voice-overs to spice things up.

The most recent Shadow of War footage establishes one thing when compared to Shadow of Mordor - the sequel will be a lot prettier. Not just form a graphical fidelity aspect, but in terms of design. The new environments are a lot more varied compared to the previous series entry, and appear to be lit a whole lot better.

Players enthusiastic enough to do a frame by frame analysis of the new trailer might also discover some new bits of siege warfare among all the stabbing and trebuchetting on display. Yes, trebuchetting is now a word.

Out of all the features Shadow of Mordor had crammed into it, the Lord of the Rings licence included, the one that got everyone drooling was the Nemesis system. With each trailer released it looks more and more like Monolith will be focusing the sequel on that, instead of hunting collectables around, Assassin's Creed style. What this new direction for the series will do to the sneaky-stabby sections of yesteryear is still unclear, but glancing back at all the things that the games industry is renowned for, a less is more approach is still unaccounted for.

More tangible Shadow of War footage or info is likely coming our way during this year's E3 and the game's release should be hot on the heels of any coming reveal, as it is set to release for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on 22 August 2017 in North America and three days later in Europe.
