Executive Producer Joe Neate confirmed that cross-play will become optional between PC an Xbox One players in the latest Sea of Thieves developer update. The developers are hoping to introduce the change in one of the future updates.

Rare are planning to introduce changes to Sea of Thieves cross-play which should give more matchmaking options to both PC and Xbox One players.

In an official developer update video, Sea of Thieves' Executive Producer Joe Neate said that the decision has been made after player feedback and it should bring a more fair and balanced experience to everyone.

For example, optional cross-play will allow players who play on Xbox One with a controller to only matchmake with other Xbox One players using a controller.

After the optional cross-play feature gets introduced, those who want to continue playing cross-play will be split into two groups - a controller-only and a cross-play pool.

As the names suggest, the controller pool will matchmake players only against other controller users while the cross-play pool means that every user will be able to play with or against anyone regardless of their input device.

Neate said that players will be able to turn the option on and off as they please and that optional cross-play will be available across all game modes.

Rare believe that this is the right way to deal with the cross-play issue and tackle potential problems which could occur once the new PvP mode dubbed Arena gets introduced.

While these changes aren't imminent, the developers have stated that they are working on implementation and are hopeful to give players the options before the new PvP mode drops. Neate said that more info about cross-play will be shared as the developers get closer to release.

Neate also talked about mouse and keyboard support for Xbox One which is coming soon. He mentioned that those who decide to use mouse and keyboard on Xbox One will be automatically put into the cross-play pool.
