Sea of Thieves Anniversary update

Sea of Thieves' long-awaited Anniversary Update is scheduled to finally drop on 30 April 2019. The update will introduce a couple of new features such as fishing and cooking, competitive mode named The Arena and a brand new storyline.

It's almost one year since players started to sail and plunder in Rare's pirate-themed action adventure Sea of Thieves. Over the past year, Sea of Thieves received a lot of new content and updates, but to properly celebrate the anniversary, Rare are releasing a special Anniversary Update that brings new storyline, competitive mode and a couple of fresh mechanics.

The biggest addition is certainly, the long-awaited competitive mode called The Arena. In this mode, players will get to pit their ship and crew against others and share a grog with rivals in the Glorious Sea Dog tavern - a home to new Trading Company founded by heroes from Sea of Thieves comics. Rare didn't reveal specifics but a small sneak peek is featured in the trailer.

In addition to The Arena, Sea of Thieves is getting richer for a brand new storyline dubbed Tall Tales - Shores of Gold. Rare describe the new quest as a series of narrative adventures surrounding existing and all-new characters, taking you to yet undiscovered locations and revealing new gameplay features.

Speaking about the new gameplay features, the Anniversary Update will introduce two of them - fishing and cooking. According to the announcement, players can earn cosmetics and gold, as well as another path to Pirate Legend in exchange for their best food. The food can be traded at The Hunter's Call Trading Company which is led by the returning wanderer Merrick.

And last but not least, the Anniversary Update also brings along various world improvements to enhance Sea of Thieves' core gameplay experience. These improvements include expanded ship damage, meaning that your vessel can suffer a broken mast, capstan or even wheel which should make sailing and escaping battles a proper challenge.

Additionally, Rare are adding harpoon so you can nab treasures and make some surprising manoeuvres with your ship. New enemy types are also arriving in Shores of Gold to make the exploration even riskier with traps that can deal disastrous damage.
