According to Riot Games, this year Swain, the Grand General of Noxus, is going to have a big change to his abilities. It will be the first major rework on Swain since Patch 13.9 and will fix several problems that had overstayed their welcome in his gameplay.
Ever since his rework in 2018, Swain has struggled to find his groove within the League of Legends meta. His average AP ratios put him in that awkward spot where he wasn't exactly fitting the AP burst mage role and could not hold his own against dominant battlemages. Because of this, Swain has often become much more of a support than an actual solo laner-which was never Riot's intention.
Riot Games has taken cognizance of this problem and announced plans to shift Swain back to his intended role as a powerful solo laner. In a recent update video, "An Update on Some Projects," Riot Phreak discussed upcoming changes to Swain among other champions.
Although Riot didn't disclose all of the details in their breakdown, they gave some insight into what to expect. The changes are going to be more focused on grouping up Swain's playstyle and making his abilities somewhat more reliable.
Here's a tease of what's coming:
Q Ability Improvements - Currently, Swain's Q is a lot better against melees and falls off against ranged champions. Riot wants the ability to be more reliable in all matchups.
E Consistency - Swain's E gets a faster recast, which should help against highly mobile champions.
E/R Power Redistribution - Currently, most Swain players max his W second; Riot's looking to make maxing E second viable by shifting some power from W to E.
R Rebalancings - While some information behind Swain's ultimate is still unknown, Riot gave some indication that multiple Demonflare casts could be made during his ultimate
